The dirt was referred to as the soil that is put on the coffin. When a coffin is lowered, the priest asks the near and dear ones to sprinkle some soil on the coffin. The soil is here referred to as dirt because the Father McKenzie is seen wiping the “dirt” off the hands. This is because when Eleanor Rigby was buried no one was there except Father McKenzie. No one was saved because at the end of the day both were alone. One died alone and the other one continued to live alone. They could have been saved if they would have not been lonely all through their lives. Both the characters were waiting for someone who never came. May be they were waiting for some kind of companionship.
